The Fighting Back Project was created by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation to test the hypothesis that a broad collaboration of community elements could develop a central strategy to harness and focus their collective resources to significantly reduce their most serious substance abuse problems.
The objectives of the Fighting Back Project include:
a measurable and sustained reduction in the initiation of drug and alcohol use among children and adolescents;
a reduction in drug and alcohol-related deaths and injuries, especially among children, adolescents and young adults;
a decline in the prevalence of health problems related to, or exacerbated by, drug and alcohol use;
a reduction in on-the-job problems and injuries related to substance abuse, and
a reduction in drug-related crime.
The participating communities focus on populations not larger than 300,000 persons. The participants also commit the community's collective anti-drug resources toward meeting the goals and objectives of the collaborative strategy.
