San Antonio Fighting Back of the United Way

The Fighting Back target area in San Antonio includes the east and southeast sections of the city, roughly 20 percent of the total San Antonio population. The target area encompasses two city council districts, one school board district, three state legislative districts and one state senatorial district. The major employers in San Antonio are tourism, the military, and light manufacturing.

San Antonio Fighting Back is a project of the San Antonio United Way.

Objectives:

Decrease drug related crime.
Expand access to treatment for persons in the Fighting Back target area.
Reduce substance abuse among youth.

Strategy:
The Fighting Back management board provides oversight and linkages to sustain community activities, expand linkages and relationships with public institutions, and strengthen a community infrastructure, all toward ultimately reducing substance abuse. Substance abusers in the target area under criminal justice supervision receive priority placement in a pilot program for sustaining their recovery, job training, and placement. Twelve step, out patient treatment, and other support programs in the target area will be increased. Transportation to treatment facilities beyond the target area will be increased. Young persons with substance abuse problems, identified by school personnel, will be referred to treatment and/or receive priority placement in mentoring and other school based support programs.

Drug related crime

Increase job placement for persons in recovery
Number of probationers or parolees placed in jobs
Decrease in liquor violations; sales to minors
Changes in DUI incidents

Treatment

Increase target area residents in treatment
Increase number of 12 steps programs in target area
Decrease # substance abusers from target area presenting at emergency rooms
Increase numbers of persons in treatment for substance abuse
Decrease drug related deaths

Youth

Change in survey of self-reported use
Change in numbers of youth in treatment, as percentage of total # youth needing treatment
